For example, Singh mentioned a Microsoft client that saves $8 per customer service request by using AI to respond faster to customer inquiries.

Singh leads the team developing “Copilot,” Microsoft’s AI assistant specializing in sales, accounting, and online services. The goal of these applications is to drive revenue and justify the investments in generative AI technology. Copilot can assist salespeople in conducting research and reaching out to customers, ultimately saving time and increasing productivity. Companies like Lumen, a telecom company, have reported saving millions of dollars by using AI to automate tasks previously done manually.

Singh’s teams are working on integrating Copilot directly into Microsoft’s software and making it more autonomous. The vision is to have AI models that can proactively assist sales reps and perform tasks on their behalf, such as sending emails or following up with customers. This level of automation could further streamline business processes and enhance overall efficiency.

There is a looming question about whether the rise of generative AI will lead to job losses, particularly in industries like call centers. While some leaders predict that AI will replace human workers, Singh and other Silicon Valley executives are optimistic about the potential for AI to enhance human creativity and create new job opportunities. Singh cited his experience at Yahoo, where automation led to increased content production and the need for more articles to be written.
